Carmina:

Welcome to FilTrip, a podcast where we explore everything fun, weird, and in between about the Philippines. And now a quick shout out. Check out Manila Candle. Manila Candle features Filipino inspired scents like Tagaytay, Palawan, Ube Halaya and Buco and Mango. They also have fun ones like Ay Nako and Bahala Ka Sa Buhay Mo.

Patch:

Enjoy their car fresheners, wax melts and merchandise too. Visit manilacandle.com and take a trip to the Philippines through their scents.

Carmina:

Back to our show. Hi Patch. Welcome back.

Patch:

Hi Carmina. Hi listeners.

Carmina:

I hope everybody had a really great summer because we certainly did. Right, Patch?

Patch:

Yes. It was a fun summer, but towards the end we got a surprise that we not necessarily welcomed.

Carmina:

<laugh>. Exactly. So why don't we address the elephant in the room?

Patch:

Right.

Carmina:

I'm sure that people have noticed a very huge change.

Patch:

Mm-hmm.<affirmative>,

Carmina:

We are now called FilTrip.

Patch:

And the reason for that is we received a surprise in the mail.

Carmina:

That's true. We got what's called a cease and desist. And for people who have never received a cease and desist, it's not the most pleasant surprise,<laugh>. It's one of those surprises that you wish you never had. And the cease and desist, as you can probably guess from our name change, came from a billion dollar corporation and Patch, if I'm not mistaken, you own one of the vehicles that this corporation manufacturers. And don't you love it?

Patch:

<laugh>? Well, I used to love it, but now it just makes me sad.<laugh>

Carmina:

And by the way, there's a building in New York named after the manufacturer of this vehicle.

Patch:

Mm-hmm.< affirmative>.

Carmina:

That is unfortunately always in my face because it's in my neighborhood.<laugh>.

Patch:

Oh my God.

Carmina:

And I used to look at it with fondness.

Patch:

Oh no.

Carmina:

But now I can't even look at it.

Patch:

They that should not be named.

Carmina:

<laugh>. Exactly. We don't want our listeners though, to think that we didn't try everything in our power to keep our old brand. Because as we mentioned in episode one and season one, we chose it because of the very iconic meaning it has for the Philippines.

Patch:

Right.

Carmina:

You know, there were a lot of scary legal arguments that this corporation and their law firm put in their letter. But no matter how hard we tried, we really couldn't reconcile how little old us could ever be a threat to this brand. Especially since Patch in the Meriam Webster dictionary and probably in every other dictionary, there are two different entries for their vehicle and our brand.<laugh>

Patch:

Right. And we're not even talking about the same type of business. We're a podcast. We're not in the business of manufacturing vehicles.

Carmina:

But I think Patch, one of the things that they've put forth in their letter is that they also license their brand to entertainment, clothing, and everything else under the sun.

Patch:

Mm-hmm.<affirmative>,

Carmina:

They trademark everything and they can afford it. So this is one of those times when I realized something that's legal isn't necessarily fair.<laugh>

Patch:

Boo!

Carmina:

Boo is Right. So we consulted several experienced trademark attorneys, and you know what encouraged me about their feedback? We had a chance of winning if we chose to fight this, right?

Patch:

Mm-hmm.<affirmative>.

Carmina:

One of them even said that we probably had a 60% chance of winning with a huge caveat that we needed to be ready to fork out thousands and thousands of dollars.

Patch:

<laugh>. Mm-hmm.<affirmative>. And we decided in the end that our money, our time, our effort, our emotional state is best. Um,<laugh> used producing our episodes rather than fighting this.

Carmina:

So we're now called FilTrip. Yay. I'm loving it.

Patch:

Yes.

Carmina:

And I really hope our listeners will too.

Patch:

So Carmina, we should tell our listeners what to look forward to under our new banner FilTrip.

Carmina:

And of our listeners remember, in the last episode of last season, we committed to getting to know somebody.

Patch:

Who is now going to be our new best friend,<laugh>.

Carmina:

That's true. What we're talking about is Patreon.

Patch:

So for everyone who's interested, and we hope you're interested in getting to know Patreon as well, go to our page at patreon.com/ filtrip.

Carmina:

It's a way to support us at different levels through monthly contributions.

Patch:

Any level would be really appreciated.

Carmina:

But we also have a way for others to support us. You know, those who are commitment phobic.

Patch:

Right. You can also make a one time contribution through our PayPal.

Carmina:

And we'll link both Patreon and PayPal and our show notes. And Patch, I also want to thank our listeners for re-listening to all of our past episodes.

Patch:

We were surprised that they were actually still downloading our episodes, which, you know, we really appreciate.

Carmina:

And we have a lot of new, exciting topics to cover this season.

Patch:

The first one is to coincide with All Souls and All Saints Day, right? We have a True Crime podcast episode.

Carmina:

Nice!< laugh>. Scary! The other episode that they should be looking fo rward t o is an episode about Cebu.

Patch:

We also hope to uncover little known facts about Filipino holidays, such as the Bonifacio, and Rizal Days. So we're very excited for this new season. We have a lot to offer our new and old listeners, and please look forward to it.

Carmina:

O siya, siya!
