Right. And also the fact that we have a season that's very exciting to me.

So today what we want to talk about are just our reflections about these past few months,'cause I can't even believe, Patch, that we were able to put out 20 episodes.

Yeah, that's a lot. And it was so much fun, though, that it didn't seem like we did 20 episodes, right?

Yeah. It was so much fun, but also a lot of work.

Hence our need for a little bit of a break, right, so that we can regroup and-

Ok Carmina should we start with, what was your favorite episode?

Carmina: 2:24

So hard to pick? There were so many of them that I loved, but-

I think our idioms episode to me was the best one.

Yeah.<laugh> it is my favorite too. It was hard because we kept on laughing. So in that sense it was kind of hard to do, but also it was so much fun.

And even comments that we got, right? A lot of our listeners enjoyed it so much and we even got a few comments like"you made me look like a crazy person'cause I was listening to it on my walk and then I suddenly started laughing for no reason.

Well to other people, it seemed like no reason, but it was because they were listening to that episode. So that makes me so happy that we're able to make people laugh.

Which episode did you personally learn the most from?

Carmina: 3:55

It's so hard to pick. Do you have one? I feel like I learn a lot with every single one.

Patch: 4:02

Okay. I feel like the Manila episode.

Carmina: 4:04

Right.

It set the tone about the lack of resources. I remember having the hardest time looking for information about pre-colonial Philippines. So I feel like that influenced the way I did my research for the other episodes.

Carmina: 4:23

I remember us being so frustrated that we had so much about the Galleon Trade.

Patch: 4:28

<laugh> right.

Carmina: 4:29

But not a lot about pre-colonial Manila. That was so frustrating.

Patch: 4:35

Mm-hmm<affirmative>.

Carmina: 4:36

But also illustrates the challenge of generally not having documented pre-colonial history and a lot of facets of our story as a nation. And then also I think we should mention that sometimes when we do our research and when we're recording- so just to let our listeners know, we don't share notes, so we show up to the recording with each of our own research in hand- and sometimes they would conflict. So that was the other illustration to me about how difficult it is for us, you know, trying to research a lot of these facts because there's no one authoritative source to get this information from.

Right. And sometimes the conversation would be very awkward.<laugh>

Right. Like who's right.

Patch: 5:28

Carmina: 5:28

But I think the way we resolve it is we just accept that there is a difference and I don't know, how did we pick which ones to go with?

I have a question. Mm-hmm

Was there anything that surprised you- aside from learning a lot about our history?

Patch: 5:51

I'm not sure if it's a surprise, but it's a confirmation about our friendship, Carmina, is that we can talk about anything and everything under the sun. And we were in sync, we agreed in most things and agreed to disagree.<laugh> in others.

<laugh> That's a good one. We did have some disagreements in how we approached an episode.

What we were going to talk about, et cetera. But yeah, none of it was unpleasant.

<laugh> So one thing that surprised me is how freaking hard it is to adapt to the technical challenges-

- of creating a podcast. I mean, at this age we had to learn all of this techie stuff. Listeners, you have no idea- editing software, the right mic to use-

Speaking of" mic," do you remember the early days<laugh> and the setup? Cardboard was involved.

Let's just say it's much improved now.

But our greatest nemesis was social freaking media.

It still is, but do you remember how long it took for us to even do an Instagram story at one time and we had to call in help aka your daughter.

Oh my goodness. I mean, I wasn't even active on social media before we started the podcast. How about you?

Me neither. Needless to say we could still improve in that aspect, I'm sure.

But my surprise comes from the fact, again, that I don't know anybody, for example, in the Senegal<laugh>.

Yeah. That's more than one time we got that question.

And(a) I'm flattered that you think<laugh> that we're that creative to script these episodes. But no. We do plan out the topics ahead of time, right?

But scripting is really not something that we even talked about<laugh>'cause we probably knew that was gonna be impossible to do. So we show up, like I said earlier, not knowing what the other found and as we're having the conversation, generally just the conversation just flows and it somehow has worked out for 20 episodes<laugh>.

So we're answering it here<laugh>. So this one I'm sure you've gotten asked: When do you find the time to research for your episodes?<laugh>. That is a very good question,'cause we both have full-time jobs.

And it's a struggle sometimes for me. I don't know about you. Yeah, me too, to be honest. But I do look forward to our recordings and that kind of pushes me. No, I hear you. I think for me, the other thing about research is we want to impart new things, right? So that does mean going to books, the internet, academic resources, especially with, you know, our history. It's really hard to find those pre-colonial things, right? There's not a lot. And so you really have to spend the time to find interesting things to talk about. But like you, I just get very excited when I find a nugget or a factoid. It's very gratifying when people tell us, oh yeah, they didn't know that either. So that means our work paid off.

Right. We do appreciate those kinds of comments because it gives us motivation to continue.

She is one of my very good friends and barkada in college. She has a teenage daughter, Gaby, and one time she had Gaby listen to the podcast. So Gaby asked her mom-"are they together?"

When Ching first texted me that,I started responding to her in the technical sense because you know, a lot of people do ask us if we're together in the same room when we're recording this, right?

Right.

Carmina: 14:32

So I started telling her that I'm in New York and that you're in Michigan.

Mm-hmm<affirmative>.

Carmina: 14:38

And then Ching said,"No, that's not what Gaby meant."

Apparently Gaby was asking if we're"together-together."<laugh>

I mean, not that it-

- but it just so happens that really we're not together-together.

So I guess this is providing two answers for one question, right? Because we do get asked if we're together in the same room and so no, we're not and no, we're not together-together. I guess we just seem so comfortable with each other. And that's because we've known each other since we were six years old, right?

So Ching and I started texting each other about how it's so refreshing that the current generation just has this openness and broad-mindedness that we didn't have during our generation.

Number one, that probably would've never even entered our minds, right?

And two, even if we did think that, that we would never share it with our mothers<laugh>.

So kudos to Ching too, because that's showing the openness in the relationship between her and her daughter. And your mom and I had so much fun imagining your mortified expression as you listen to this for the first time.
